बाँध (Dam)

बाँध मानव निर्मित ऐसे विशाल जल संग्रह होते हैं, जहाँ पर नदियों और पहाड़ियों के जल प्रवाह मार्ग को रोककर जल का संग्रह किया जाता है।

Dams are large man-made water bodies where water is collected by blocking the flow of rivers and hills.

जल एक महत्वपूर्ण संसाधन है। यह जीवन हेतु बहुत आवश्यक होता है। वर्तमान समय में बढ़ती हुई मानव जनसंख्या, शहरीकरण, औद्योगीकीकरण, कृषि, ऊर्जा उत्पादन आदि की वजह से जल की माँग में लगातार वृद्धि हो रही है। वनों की अन्धाधुंध कटाई, पर्यावरण प्रदूषण, जल का दुरुपयोग, वर्षा की दर में कमी आदि की वजह से जल की उपलब्धता में लगातार कमी होती जा रही है। कूप खनन, जल पम्पों आदि के द्वारा भूमिगत जल का अत्यधिक दोहन किया जा रहा है। इस कारण भूमिगत जल स्तर भी नीचे गहराई की ओर बढ़ता जा रहा है। अतः जल संरक्षण हमारे लिए बहुत अनिवार्य है। इसी अनिवार्यता के कारण वर्तमान में बाँधों का निर्माण किया जा रहा है।

Water is an important resource. It is very necessary for life. Due to increasing human population, urbanization, industrialization, agriculture, energy production, etc., the demand for water is increasing continuously. Due to indiscriminate deforestation, environmental pollution, misuse of water, decrease in the rate of rainfall, etc., the availability of water is continuously decreasing. Ground water is being heavily exploited through well mining, water pumps etc. Due to this, the underground water level is also increasing towards the depth below. So water conservation is very important for us. Due to this imperative, dams are being built at present.

बाँध बनाने से लाभ (Benefits Of Building A Dam)

बाँध बनाने के प्रमुख उद्देश्य एवं लाभ निम्नानुसार हैं–
1. मानव जनसंख्या के लिए पेयजल उपलब्ध करवाना।
2. सिंचाई हेतु जल का संग्रह और वर्ष भर जल की उपलब्धता बनाये रखना।
3. जल को रोककर भूमिगत जल के स्तर को बढ़ाना।
4. मृदा अपरदन को रोकना।
5. जंगली क्षेत्रों में जंगली जानवरों के लिए पेयजल उपलब्ध कराना।
6. नदियों के तटों के निकट बसी जनसंख्या की बाढ़ के प्रकोप से सुरक्षा करना।
7. औद्योगिक इकाइयों के लिए जलापूर्ति करना।
8. जल विद्युत् का उत्पादन करना।
9. बाँधों के द्वारा दृश्यावलोकन के लिए प्राकृतिक सौन्दर्य का निर्माण करना।

The main objectives and benefits of building dams are as follows–
1. To provide drinking water for human population.
2. Collection of water for irrigation and maintaining availability of water throughout the year.
3. Raising the level of ground water by holding water.
4. Preventing Soil Erosion.
5. To provide drinking water for wild animals in wild areas.
6. To protect the population living near the banks of rivers from the wrath of floods.
7. To supply water to industrial units.
8. To generate hydroelectricity.
9. Creating natural beauty for visualization through dams.

बाँध बनाने से उत्पन्न समस्याएँ (Dam Building Problems)

बाँध हमारे लिए उपयोगी और लाभप्रद होने के साथ-साथ अनेक प्रकार की समस्याएँ भी उत्पन्न कर देते हैं। बाँधों के कारण उत्पन्न प्रमुख समस्याएँ निम्नलिखित हैं–
1. किसी क्षेत्र में बाँध का निर्माण होने से उस क्षेत्र के अधिकांश वृक्षों का सफाया हो जाता है।
2. बाँध निर्माण से वनों में निवास करने वाले वन्य जीवों के प्राकृतिक आवास नष्ट हो जाते हैं। उन वन्य जीवों को नये आवास स्थल खोजना पड़ता है। उनके लिए भोजन की उपलब्धता कम हो जाती है तथा वे नष्ट हो जाते हैं। इन दोनों कारणों से जैव विविधता में कमी आती है।
3. किसी क्षेत्र में बाँध का निर्माण करने से उस क्षेत्र में बसी जनजातीय बस्तियों का विस्थापन करना पड़ता है। इस कारण उन्हें अत्यधिक परेशानियों का सामना करना पड़ता है। उनकी आर्थिक स्थिति खराब हो जाती है। उन्हें नये क्षेत्र में बसाना पड़ता है।

Dams are useful and beneficial for us as well as create many types of problems. Following are the major problems caused by dams–
1. Due to the construction of a dam in an area, most of the trees in that area are wiped out.
2. Due to the construction of the dam, the natural habitat of the wild animals living in the forests is destroyed. Those wild animals have to find new habitat. Food becomes less available for them and they perish. Biodiversity decreases due to both these reasons.
3. By building a dam in an area, the tribal settlements in that area have to be displaced. Due to this they have to face a lot of troubles. Their financial condition worsens. They have to settle in a new area.
