(Units)

A definite quantity or standard voluntarily chosen for the measurement of a physical quantity is called a 'unit' of that physical quantity.
Eg– The unit of length is meter, the unit of mass is kilogram, the unit of time is second, the unit of force is Newton, the unit of heat is Kelvin, the unit of electric current is Ampere etc.

(How Is Measurement Done?)

Let's take some physical quantities to understand measurement–
1. Length– The unit of length is 'meter'.
15 m = 15 × 1 m
Here, the length of 15 meters is 15 times of the given unit (1 metre).
2. Mass– The unit of mass is 'kg'.
20 kg = 20 × 1 kg
Here, the mass of 20 kg is 20 times the given unit (1 kg).
3. Force– The unit of force is 'Newton'.
50 Newton = 50 × 1 Newton
Here, 50 Newton force is 50 times the given unit (1 Newton).

(Types Of Units)

There are mainly three types of units–
1. Basic Unit
2. Derived Unit
3. Complementary units.

(Fundamental Units)

The units of basic quantities are called 'basic units'. These units are independent of each other. No other units are needed to express them. The number of basic units is seven.
Example– Meter, Kilogram, Second, Kelvin, Ampere, Candilla, Mole.
Basic units are used as standards for physical quantities. Initially only the meter, kilogram and second were considered as the basic units. Later on, ampere, kelvin, candila and mole were also included in this category.

(Derived Units)

Units of derived quantities are called 'Derived units'. These are expressed with the help of basic units. These units are not independent of each other.
Examples– Units of physical quantities like displacement, velocity, acceleration, speed, angular displacement, angular velocity, momentum, impulse, work, energy, power, pressure, density, volume, area, force, weight, moment of inertia, magnetic field, electric field, magnetization intensity, electric intensity etc.

(Supplementary Units)

The units of complementary quantities are called 'complement units'. These are neither fundamental units nor derived units. The number of complementary units is two.
Example– The unit of plane angle is radian and the unit of cubic angle is steradian.

(System Of Units)

The combined form of basic units and derived units is called 'system of units'. Following are the major systems of units–
1. MKS System (Meter Kilogram-Second)– In this system of units the unit of length is meter, the unit of mass is kilogram and the unit of time is second. This is also called 'metric method'.
2. CGS System (Centimeter Gram Second)– In this system of units the unit of length is centimeter, the unit of mass is gram and the unit of time is second. This method is also called 'Gaussian method' and 'Decimal method'.
3. FPS System (Foot Pound-Second)– In this system of units, the unit of length is the foot, the unit of mass is the pound and the unit of time is the second. This method is also called 'British Method'.
4. International Standard System (S.I. Method)– In 1960 AD, the International Committee of Measures and Measures determined a system of units. It is called the International Standard Method or S.I. method. This method has been developed by developing the MKS method. In this method there are seven basic signs and two complementary signs.
Fundamental Quantities– Length, Mass, Time, Electric Current, Temperature, Light Intensity, Quantity of Matter.
Complementary Quantities– Plane Angles and Cubic Angles.
