The main watershed of the rivers of peninsular India is formed by the Western Ghats. This water divide is located from north to south near the west coast. Major rivers of peninsular India such as Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri flow eastwards and finally merge into the Bay of Bengal. These rivers form deltas at their mouths. Some small rivers of peninsular India flow from the Western Ghats to the west. Narmada and Tati are the only two major rivers, which flow in the west direction. These rivers fall into the Arabian Sea. These rivers form estuaries at their mouths. Most of the drainage basins and rivers of peninsular India are smaller in size than the Himalayan rivers.

(Other Rivers)

Besides the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri rivers, there are also some smaller rivers, which flow towards the east. Damodar, Brahmani, Vaitarni and Suvarna Rekha are important rivers flowing in the east direction. The coastal plain between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats is very narrow. Therefore, the length of the rivers of the west coast is very less. Apart from Narmada and Tapi, other major west flowing rivers are Sabarmati, Mahi, Bharat-Puzha and Periyar. The length of these rivers is very short.

Note– About 71% of the Earth's surface is covered by water. About 97% of the total water on Earth is saline. Only 3% of the water is clean and fit for human consumption. Three-fourth of this water is also in the form of glaciers of the Himalayas. The remaining one-fourth of the water is in our rivers, lakes, springs, wells etc., which is used in daily life. Therefore water should be used thrifty.
